Syrians voted in a parliamentary election in government-held areas on Wednesday. The result of the vote is expected on Thursday. The election is going ahead independently of a U.N. led peace process aimed at finding a political solution to the five-year-long war.
IS militants struck back in an attack on an Iraqi army base near Ramadi. This comes just days after the city was recaptured by government troops. At least sixty government soldiers are reported to have been killed. For more we have on the line Mr Na'eem Jeenah from the Afro Middle East Centre.

The Islamic State militant group Isis - based in Syria and Iraq - claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks. It said the attacks were to punish France for its involvement in the conflicts in Syria and Iraq, and for its attitude to Islam.
